Gudrun Stürmer, head of the 'Stadttaubenprojekt', in its sanctuary in Frankfurt's district Oberrad. The container is used as a quarantaine station for sick or injured pigeons. Stürmer founded the 'Stadttaubenprojekt' 30 years ago after she had started picking up injured or sick pigeons from the streets and took care of them in her basement. "I am not and have never been a pigeons fancier. But I started to think that pigeons are treated like shit in any way and decided to do something about it", she says. The 'Stadttaubenprojekt' has since grown to be the biggest pigeon activism project in the world. Today it counts about 30 volunteers who help take care and pick up pigeons and about 300 members who help finance the project.
