Gudrun Stürmer, head of the pigeon shelter project 'Stadttaubenprojekt', is walking through a parking garage on the afternoon of New Years Eve to collect injured and sick pigeons to protect them from the fireworks. People, she says, tend to torture pigeons with fireworks. Most city pigeons die of starvation. The second biggest cause of death are accidents with cars, bikes or by pest control methods like traps, nets or spikes. Animal cruelty beats diseases as the third biggest cause of death. Gudrun Stürmer took care of pigeons that had been shot with air guns, stabbed with dart arrows or paperclips, or doused in gasoline and set on fire.
