Ghetto Birds 3
Gudrun Stürmer, head of the pigeon shelter project 'Stadttaubenprojekt', is walking through a parking garage in downtown Frankfurt on the afternoon of New Years Eve to collect injured and sick pigeons to protect them from the fireworks. Stürmer is carrying the birds in her jute bag through which the pigeons can breathe. Some People, she says, tend to torture pigeons with fireworks. Most city pigeons die of starvation. The second biggest cause of death are accidents with cars, bikes or by pest control methods like traps, nets or spikes. Animal cruelty beats diseases as the third biggest cause of death. Gudrun Stürmer took care of pigeons that had been shot with air guns, stabbed with dart arrows or paperclips, or doused in gasoline and set on fire. She thinks that a lot of people view city pigeons as parasites that prefer the conditions in which they live in. But since city pigeons derive from bred ancestors they inherited the instinct to breed in rocks. In cities they use buildings ledges, abadandoned apartments and balconies as a replacement.
